Brilliant Stages was approached with a brief to design, engineer and manufacture an automated grandstand structure to be used by Monster Energy in motocross events around Europe.
The concept for the deployment of the seating frames was inspired by the Thomas Heatherwick Bridge in Paddington canal basin.
Due to the design parameters specified by our client, we were tasked with ensuring a rapid build procedure. To meet this high specification driven by our client, we designed a complex hydraulically operated grandstand structure that is deployed at the push of 5 simple buttons. It takes 4 hours for the structure to be fully deployed, and has a capacity of 180, being the only purpose built grandstand on the MXGP circuit.
As an additional requirement within our brief from Monster, we had to include an immersive events space. This completely separate structure had to still comply with the parameters laid out in the brief, for rapid deployment. Therefore, we supplied an automated stage structure that ensures the operatives are working at height for minimal time. The tricky part was designing the interface between the 2 structures and ensuring the gap remained watertight. This was combatted by designing a simple water management system.
